My Netgains Internship Experience

I have written several blogs or articles about my Indian life, especially those days in Netgains as an SEO analyst, in English.

But I think it is also necessary to express something in English about this experience, to let my workmates and friends know How much did I Enjoy that period of Amazing Time.

Since I started to apply for the internship abroad through AIESEC, India, to be honest, was not my priority; It was Poland and Germany where I send a lot of CVs to, and fortunately, I got two offers finally. Meanwhile, that internship form about SEO jumped into my eyes when I was wandering in the myaiesec.com.

I was quite interested about that form, cause I have known something about SEO industry, and it is quite related to my major, so I read through the full job description, and log on the company's website to have a glimpse, impressive! I have to say, this looks like a red-blooded IT company, the projects the company has done seems awesome, and the corporate culture suits most of my favors.

The only problem is , India. Can I luckily survive after the three months' indian life? (the result was quite positive,as I can tell you, now). I suppose I can, so, that's the start of the journey.

I took a serious and quite technical interview by the CEO of Netgains, Mr. Malik Sumeet. I was quite impressed  when I first heard his voice, typical American accent (Later did I know Mr. Sumeet had studied and worked in USA for several years), I was really nervous, but still, enjoyed the whole talk.

You can not imagine how Happy I was when I got the confirmation of this internship, I refused the German and Polish job and booked the ticket to Delhi soon, not long after that, I was sitting in the office of Netgains , in sector 20A(I can never forget this number, guys, I had to repeat this days after days to the auto-rickshaw driver(a popular three-wheels-car in India) to tell him where I want to go with my waving arms sometimes when he cannot understand English, still funny), Chandigarh.

I met Deepika(we had so many argues about the political differences between China and India, it is a tie, btw ,lol), Sam(my later best bro in India) , Ashish(funniest guy in India); the enthusiastic and curious designers and programmers upstairs and of course , my boss, Mr.Sumeet.

He is so different from 'my picture of Indian man', handsome;tall;strong;nice-smile---this is the first impression , smart;well-organised;hard-working;strict;efficient---this is what I learned later. I can say, I learned second-most stuff from Mr.Sumeet during the whole period, just after the Indian travel experiences.

He gave me a short introduction of my responsibility and the papers and docs I had to grasp(which is still useful now in my life), to make sure I can be in the right path, and be efficient.

In the very beginning of my internship, the greatest challenge is to grasp the new knowledge in the shortest time, thanks to the help of Mr. Sumeet and Sam and others, although there's some problems during the internship, I conquered them all, and started to work on the real project after the first month.

I don't want to give too many details about the work content, those I really want to tell you is How I Feel About This Unforgettable Journey.

1.I was really impressive how hard-working the IT people in India can be, they actually don't need to take a rest and keep efficient all the time, it totally changed my thought to Indian people.
2. I was also impressive about how awesome the India High-tech industry are nowadays, we, China, are far behind them now, they have a large number of talented people, this is the most significant difference which we have to admit.
3. They need more entertainment, maybe, Lol.

This internship in India totally changed my view to this country and to this world, it also makes me a more well-organised and tough people. Most Importantly, I have decided to work in this related industry, and this experience in India and Netgains will benefit me forever!

Thank You! Netgains! Salute!

The New York Review of Books中的书评,'How Google Dominates Us',by James Gleick.

在文中,他提出一个现象,‘Google is where we go for answers. People used to go elsewhere or, more likely, stagger along not knowing. Nowadays you can’t have a long dinner-table argument about who won the Oscar for that Neil Simon movie where she plays an actress who doesn’t win an Oscar; at any moment someone will pull out a pocket device and Google it.’

4 Reasons Google+ Brand Pages Will Be Better Than Facebook’s, from Mashable

Converting Facebook’s 750 million active users to Google+ will be a long, difficult battle for the search giant. But converting brands to Google+ will be much easier if Google+ is able to solve advertisers’ biggest problems with Facebook — such as post-click engagement tracking, paid search inefficiencies and limited customization.
Advertisers drive paid media to their Facebook Pages because they want to be where their audience is, but there’s a major flaw in this strategy. Advertisers can’t track post-click engagement of non-Facebook ads driving to Facebook, and that’s a huge disadvantage in qualifying traffic and uncovering valuable user insights. Without such information, we can only guess whether media dollars are being well spent.
In a month or two, Google+ will launch its highly anticipated brand pages. Here are four reasons why marketers are right to be excited and why Google+ brand pages will provide a better branded experience than Facebook.

1. Better Search Opportunites

A major challenge with driving paid search ads to a Facebook page is that the Facebook.com domain generates a lower click-through rate (CTR), most likely due to people finding the domain irrelevant to their query. The low CTR makes for a low quality score in Google’s auction-model, which typically increases cost per click for paid search ads driving to Facebook versus a unique brand domain. The loss in cost efficiency of driving to a Facebook page has been an ongoing struggle for advertisers, particularly on Google, which has over 60% of the search market.
It would be crazy for search giant Google not to have search benefits for Google+ brand pages, whether it is a “certified check mark” callout (like on Twitter), a colored box around the listing, or possibly page-rank priority. Search benefits would likely be the strongest reason for brands to adopt a Google+ brand page. The only flaw in this theory is that giving brand pages’ extra benefits in search could raise the specter of anti-trust action and legal challenges.

2. More Customization

Facebook ad types are limited to just ads, sometimes with a video or poll, allowing for few branding or creative opportunities. Looking at the design of Google+ personal pages, I predict the two skyscraper-sized white spaces on each side of the profile will be opportunities for custom skinning of your brand page and for display or rich media ads.
Google+ users are probably cursing me for suggesting the placement of ads on the currently clean design of Google+, but I am speaking specifically about allowing brands to advertise and skin their own pages as seen on branded YouTube channels such as Old Spice and Miracle Whip. These are great examples of how Google+ brand pages can deliver stronger brand experiences and help brands raise awareness of special promotions, as well as letting them drive qualified traffic to pages outside of Google+.
I would not be surprised if advertising opportunities were immediately available after the launch of Google+ brand pages, since Google is fully prepared to support it with its Google Display Network, AdWords and DoubleClick advertising products.

3. Better Analytics

People who have used Google Analytics know how detailed the data is, including metrics like time spent on page, top content, referring sites and geographic information. It seems inevitable for Google to integrate Google Analytics into Google+ brand pages, so that brands can gain valuable insights into who their fans are, what content their fans are consuming, and where they are coming from.
All this data will guide brands in the prioritization, organization and creation of content for their page, which will lead to an improved experience that better suits fans’ interests and needs. More importantly, Google Analytics and DoubleClick reporting products will let advertisers tie paid media placements to page interaction, and help to optimize and maximize the value of media spend.

4. Google Can Learn from Facebook

Facebook pioneered one-on-one connections between a brand and its fans through social networking, and will continue to be valuable for inherently social brands like musicians and celebrities. But for less social industries such as insurance, health and, say, paper towels, Google+ provides a platform that is open to conversation and focuses on providing branded content and valuable information in one place.
Facebook’s successes and missteps offer invaluable lessons, giving Google second-mover advantage in creating a brand page based on brands’ need for more customization, a hub to aggregate content across the web, strong search presence and user-engagement data. However, if Google+ brand pages turn out to be a replica of Facebook’s, the battle could be over before it’s begun.

Baidu Launched Beta Testing Personalized Homepage

Google released new product Google+ in its late effort to rival Facebook and Twitter in social networking area even after several unsuccessful attempts including controversial Google Buzz, Google Wave and so on. Its Chinese counterpart Baidu also had a tough trip ramping up its own social network services, with the latest release of brand-new Baidu personalized homepage (pictured below), it seems Baidu has made up its mind to keep trying.
Today is the first day of Baidu Technology Innovation Conference 2011 in Beijing, a very important event for Baidu where several new products will be announced. Baidu launched their new homepage for login users with newly added modules as shown above last night around 8pm.

The new homepage scraps the “empty page with a search box,” the minimalism first pioneered by Google and adopted by search engines everywhere, including Baidu. The change took effect last night for users who are registered with a Baidu account.

It seems the giant Chinese search engine is beta testing the new feature, only a small proportion of its users are directed to the newly-revamped personalized homepage, on which lots of Baidu services are integrated there, including updates from Baidu Tieba(BBS), Baidu Zone(SNS), Baidu Zhidao (social Q&A) and other apps from Baidu Open Platform.
Baidu New Homepage Details
Baidu’s new homepage adds four new sections below the search box:
1.       Favorite sites: Users are encouraged to add their favorite sites to this space. Baidu has announced ‘Connect’ functionality with a number of third-party sites that require log-in, such as Sina Weibo and Renren. If a user is logged-in to their Baidu account, he or she won’t have to log-in again for the other site.
2.       Hot topics: Trending topics based on searches on Baidu and the user’s interests.
3.       Applications: Recommended web applications (games, life, productivity, e-commerce) for the user. CEO Robin Li announced that application downloads on Baidu’s open platform have reached 1.64 billion. This section is an extension of Baidu’s ‘box computing’ strategy, which displays applications directly in search results.
4.       Social Feed: The latest news from social sites, including both Baidu’s properties and other third-party sites.Baidu has failed to build a winning social media product itself, but seems cognizant of this growing user need.
According to some observers, the beta-testing product looks like the profile page on SNS websites, users can personalized it based on one’s needs. And in the future it could integrate with Baidu’s social networking platform. Baidu founder and CEO Robin Li said in this June that ”Baidu is building a common social networking platform as infrastructure, when user comes to Baidu, he may switch seamlessly and intuitively among different Baidu products and apps. He may spend more time on Baidu, and he can also have instant access to desirable information.” One may wonder, could this be the common platform Robin talked about.
In general, Chinese sites tend to be far ‘busier’, more crowded with content than their foreign counterparts. But Baidu had always resisted, maintaining a homepage nearly as sparse as Google’s.
Baidu’s new homepage reflects the firm’s aim to become a destination site for far more than just search.

8 Ways PPC and SEO Are Better When Used Together

Pay per click (PPC) is an Internet advertising model used to direct traffic to websites, where advertisers pay the hosting service when the ad is clicked. With search engines, advertisers typically bid on keyword phrases relevant to their target market. Content sites commonly charge a fixed price per click rather than use a bidding system.
Many people approach SEO and PPC as completely separate strategies. And while they are different in many ways, it can be helpful to think of SEO and PPC as being two sides of the same coin: search. There are many ways in which SEO and PPC efforts complement each other, and lead to a more successful search strategy. Consider these eight ways that make a coordinated SEO and PPC strategy greater than the sum of its parts.
1.        Visibility

The most obvious benefit of combining SEO and PPC efforts is added exposure on the search engine results pages (SERPs). Clients are often tempted to reduce PPC efforts once a search term ranks number one. However, it's important to remember that the top two or three results on most SERPs are PPC ads. Dominating the organic and paid search results will greatly increase traffic, and give the impression that you're an established presence in a particular market.

2.        Share Keyword Data

Simultaneously running organic and PPC campaigns gives you double the data to analyze. Determine which organic and PPC keywords have the highest conversion rate, and use that information to optimize your overall strategy.

3.        Use Best Performing PPC Ad Copy to Inform Your Organic Content Strategy

What works for PPC often works for SEO. By determining which PPC ads result in the most conversions, you'll have a good idea how to create title tags, meta descriptions and page content for the pages that you want to rank organically. The benefit of using PPC ads to test page attributes is the immediacy of the results. You'll know pretty quickly what works and what doesn't, while organically testing titles and metas can take a long time.

4.        Integrate E-Commerce Feeds into AdWords Results

Google is doing some pretty cool things when it comes to e-commerce. You can now link specific product pages to PPC ads. The ad will feature the product, often with reviews, and will take the user directly to the product page, where a purchase can be made. This is a great way to give your existing e-commerce efforts a boost.
5.        Use Site Search Data to Inform PPC Keywords

The main goal of PPC advertising is to figure out which
keywords your customers use to find your product or service. Enabling site search on your website, and analyzing the terms that are frequently used, can give valuable insight into your customers' needs and search habits.

6.        Combat Negative PR

Occasionally, someone will say something negative about your company. It happens, and when it does, combined PPC and SEO efforts can be great damage control. The principle is similar to the first point in this list:
visibility. You can guide the conversation more effectively if you control the SEO and PPC results for a certain term. A great example was seen during the Gulf oil spill. For some time afterward, BP paid for PPC ads linked to the keyword 'oil spill.' The PPC ad led to a page on BP's site about the cleanup effort. They wanted to make sure that whenever someone searched 'oil spill,' BP's PPC ad was at the top of the list. Use this technique to help tell your side of the story.

7.        Social Media Visibility

The social media landscape is changing dramatically, and part of that change has been the emergence of highly targeted advertising opportunities. Sites like Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube (owned by Google) can serve up ads targeted to incredibly specific groups of people. Using Facebook user profile information, it's possible to show an ad only to 22 year olds living in Kansas City who are interested in motorcycles and horticulture. It may be a small group, but it's precise. The data that you collect from these campaigns may uncover granular details about your target audience, and help refine your overall SEO strategy.

8.        Test Strategic Organic Keywords with PPC

PPC ads are a great way to refine your organic keyword strategy. As your long term organic keyword strategy evolves, test the conversion rate of the words you want to rank for with PPC ads. You'll get immediate feedback on the effectiveness of the organic keywords you're after, and can fine tune your strategy accordingly.

The Smurfs

(The Smurfs).

The Secret to Making Connections that Work ---staying in touch after getting in touch

You see, I have been in Chandigarh and worked for Netgains for almost one month, the number of friends I’ve met here is approximately equal to that of my 3-year-university life. One of the numerous of similar situations here: last night, there was a farewell party for one of my best friend- Chris,an awesome mother-fucker guy from Ningbo Nottingham University, there are around 30 people sitting in a gorgeous Chinese restaurant from different countries with all strange-pronounced names, after dinner, we chatted with each other and took pictures together, exchange the facebook accounts, we became friends.
But, do I really know these people a lot? Of course not, I know more about the sanitation worker who collects the rubbish accumulated in my house garden than these people. Nevertheless, these are really nice people that I do want to know more and establish further friendships. How? Social Networks, of course!

Meeting and friending people has become fairly easy with social networks, live events, and a gazillion ways to locate, like, and follow peers.
Before we start the discussion focused on this topic, think this over ’what do you value?’ When you start making more decisions based upon what's really important and figure out a way to measure that, the return is easier to spot.
Being connected helps us put what we learn to good use. This is true for businesses as it is for individuals. Connections are also situational, just like influence can be. There is tons of great information out there for becoming technically savvy.
The challenge is that there are no best practices in being human. And ‘making the connection’ is not the hardest part. ‘Keeping it ‘is. So how do you go about finding ways for it to be mutually beneficial and memorable? Here is some tips I wanna share with you from Valeria Maltoni :
  • make some notes in the back of the card about where you met that person and what you talked about, then enter them in your electronic database with their contact information
  • it's a good idea to follow up with people right after an event, while the energy from the experience is still high, and it's likely they'd remember it if not you
  • if you have resources like articles, posts, links, or connections to people, you can share and make in your follow up, that gets you started on a good and memorable footing
  • after the initial contact, that's when things tend to drop off, especially as time goes by
  • so it's a good idea to develop a system to keep track of when you contact people similar to the one you may have learned about when you were looking for your first job or the next gig
  • that was you can revisit it periodically to touch base with people you may not have heard from or talked to in a while
  • make it a habit to share with that person special content, leads, helpful things as you come across them
  • this means you will need to navigate the fine line between inundating people with stuff and being useful
  • being useful could even be sending short messages on Twitter when appropriate -- it's scalable on social networks, and you can make it meaningful by personalizing the comment
Connections are a gift. When you put a little bit of effort in maintaining them, you'll be surprised at the developments and possibilities they bring into your work, and life. Often it's the connections of the people you meet that end up making a difference.
So, this can be the initial move of strengthen your social network, but then, comes the bigger puzzle: ’How to be a highly connective person?’ Here is some tips given by Anil Dash:
(1.) Believe you can make a difference
In case you were wondering if this is only touchy-feely, look at how Dana White built a UFC empire out of his desire to connect with fans.
(2.) Think knowledge as a service
It's an overused expression, it really does apply. We live in a remix culture, where individuals, industries, and media will thrive by allowing the exchange of ideas. That's where new connections are made.
(3.) Take risks
They can be small ones. This was one of my points when I talked about passion as well. Creating new habits involves exploring new territory.
(4.) Have a point with your view
In other words, put substance behind the approach. Do your homework, be prepared to defend and discuss a topic intelligently and willingly.
(5.) Keep your promises
This is valid at individual and organizational level. Coming through, following up helps you maintain integrity of purpose and build credibility..
Whether you use social networks, email, even snail, staying in touch after getting in touch is the secret to making connections that work.

OK, that’s all I can figure out now, if you have any creative thought or ideas wanted to be shared and discussed, leave a comment below. ;0
